Kauai is an island known for its scenic and
cultural diversity.
Here is a brief scenic tour:
NORTH SHORE
- Kauai's north shore extends from the Kilauea, west along Highway 56 to
the end of the road at Haena State Park. Kilauea is home of the
Kilauea Lighthouse and National Wildlife Refuge. Princeville is one
of the world's finest resort communities with two world-class golf
courses, tennis courts, two resort hotels and shopping area. Hanalei
is a picturesque community nestled along the shore of Hanalei Bay.
Beyond the town of Hanalei, the road narrows as you wind your way along
beautiful beaches, across quaint one-lane bridges and finally to the end
of the road at Haena State Park. More adventurous visitors can
continue on foot by hiking the 11 mile trail along the Na Pali Coast.
EAST SHORE:
When you land at Lihue Airport, you'll be at the south end of Kauai's east
shore which extends north from Lihue to Anahola. This bustling coast
line is home to most of Kauai's full time residents and includes the
communities of Kapaa and Wailua. Take a boat ride up the Wailua
River (Hawaii's only navigable river) to the Fern Grotto. You can
learn about Kauai's history at the Kauai Museum on Rice Street in Lihue.
Kauai's culture is preserved at the Kauai Heritage Center of the Hawaiian
Culture and Arts at Kaua'i Village in Kapaa.
SOUTH SHORE: Who hasn't dreamed of a relaxing
vacation in sunny Poipu? But there's more to the south than just
beautiful beaches and golf resorts. Take time to explore the
picturesque shops of old Koloa town, the art galleries in Hanapepe or set
out to sea on a scenic cruise from Port Allen. Along the way you'll
see the famous "Tunnel of Trees", the Sprouting Horn, and the Lawai and
Allerton Botanical Gardens.
WEST SHORE:
Kauai's longest stretches of white sandy beaches lie along the west shore.
It is also where you'll begin your climb up through Waimea Canyon to Kokee
State Park. Rent a four wheel drive vehicle and set out through the
sugar cane fields to Polihale beach at the end of the road on Kauai's West
Shore, at the foot of the dramatic Na Pali coastline.
